ALL THAT GLEESONS ISN'T GOLD (FRANK OF IRELAND)

Anyone who was fortunate to see Brendan Gleeson and his sons  in Enda Walsh's 'The Walworth Farce'  in Dublin's Olympia Theatre six years ago will know how adept they are at physical comedy. The trio are back together in the final episode of Channel 4 and Amazon Prime's 'Frank of Ireland' - a sitcom vehicle created by his sons Brian and Domhnall Gleeson for themselves. Both have made their mark in TV shows like 'Love/Hate,' 'Peaky Blinders' and 'Run,' while Domhnall in particular has enjoyed huge success in movies like  'Brooklyn' ,  'Ex Machina,' 'The Revenant'  and the recent  'Star Wars' trilogy. So why is this series so earth shatteringly disappointing? Brian Gleeson plays Frank, a feckless 32 year old man child who lives at home in North Co Dublin with his mum, Pom Boyd's maneating Mary. Frank fancies himself as a musician and a songwriter. The problem is the songs he writes are pretty rubbish

DEPARTURES AND ARRIVALS (OSCARS 2021 - THE RESULTS)

There were a few departures from tradition at the 2021 Oscars but this was another Academy Awards where the voters decided to spread the love.  For the first and hopefully last Oscar ceremony of the Covid era, the biggest departure was the holding of the ceremony in a railway station. However it was a night of only a few surprises. Viewers may have been taken aback  that Best Picture was not the final award of the night. That honour went to the Best Actor award and that did not go according to the form book. Coming off the back of his recent BAFTA win, Anthony Hopkins won for his hugely respected performance as a man suffering from dementia in Florian Zeller's relationship drama 'The Father'. The Welshman had seen some sentiment swing towards him in recent days following his BAFTA success.  However the general consensus was that the Best Actor category was a lock for the late Chadwick Boseman for his final movie role in 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'. After all, Bos

THE COVID OSCARS (ACADEMY AWARDS PREDICTIONS 2021)

It is going to be an Oscars ceremony like never before. Last year's Oscars took place before the Coronavirus shut down many countries. This year as the world still grapples with Covid-19, the Academy Awards has had to radically rethink how it is going to hand out its statuettes just like every other major awards ceremony has done over the last year. Instead of taking place in February, the event has switched to late April. This year's ceremony will flit between Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre and Union Station because of social distancing. Nominees will also be able to join via satellite from London and Paris. All of this has made for a rather different type of awards season. This year's runners and riders have had to find audiences mostly through streaming services instead of cinemas which have been shut because of the pandemic. Some of the contenders have yet to made available in some territories. But how does Pomona rate the favourites' chances? As is traditional, Pom

FAMILY FORTUNES (MINARI)

Hot on the heels of  last year's breakthrough Best Picture Oscar victory  by Bong Joon-Ho's  'Parasite' , comes another Academy Award nominated film about a Korean family. Lee Isaac Chung's drama 'Minari' is a partially autobiographical tale about an immigrant family whose father uproots them from California to Arkansas. A winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, it has become a formidable contender during awards season, picking up six Oscar nominations including for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Set in Ronald Reagan's America in the 1980s, Steven Yeun plays Jacob Yi who leads his young family to the heart of Arkansas and a plot of land where he plans to build a farm. Jacob likes to dream big, insisting the land they are acquiring is the best soil you could get in the US for the growing of plants and vegetables. However his wife, Han Ye-ri's Monica is more sceptic
